In the BUT test the presence of fluorescein in the tears may stimulate reflex tearing and may also result in changes to the tear film properties. To overcome these potential limitations, using a non-invasive procedure is the best way because the eye is not touched.
With Interferometry we can evaluate the thickness of the lipids.
The color and structure of the lipid layer is visible and can be recorder. This projected image shows both quantity and quality of the lipid layer, which correlates with tear film evaporation and dry eye symptoms.

I.C.P. Dry eye analysis
I.C.P OSA is the new instrument of individual analysis of tear film that allows to do a quick detailed structural research of the tear composition.

Thanks to I.C.P. OSA it is possible to identify the type of DED (Dry Eye Desease) and which layers can be treated with a specific treatment, in relation to the type of deficiency.

With white LEDs lighting, the device displays in vivo the phenomenon of interference fringes and it is possible to assess the thickness of the lipid component of the tear and run the NiBUT.
With blue LEDs lighting (instilling the fluorescein), it creates a large area and allows you to perform the BUT and look fluorescein of large diameter scleral and mini scleral contact lenses type.
Immediate interpretation and follow up
Through the use of GRADING SCALE dedicated to each value obtained from the exams, the interpretation of data results becomes easy and immediate thanks to many type of report that you can save and print. It is possible to preserve each result, or the summary of the exams done in a day, or a detailed temporal graphics that allows to demonstrate in simple steps the need of the treatments and then the effective functioning of these.
In this way, people subjected to exams with OSA can see really simply their condition thanks to the personalized and colored scales that contain the results of all the examinations done and elaborated.
The system is provided with a kit of useful grids to perform various screenings, all filters are already present in the system software and includes tests to evaluate and diagnose dry eye diseases to recommend the right treatment.

Summing up …
Through the acquisition of a series of 3 blinks, the device allows to obtain the thickness of Lipid Layer of the tear film classifying it in 7 different categories in a quick and precise way, related to the meibomian glands secretion.
There are many grading scale and comparison over time for detailed and precise follow up.
For a detailed analysis of the mucin layer, it evaluates in both modes the break up time and, so, the stability through the classic BUT with fluorescein in blue light or the non-invasive and quick NIBUT.

Tear film is the thin layer of liquid (about 8 μ, its thickness is variable depending on the considered portion and it results at maximum at cornea level) composed by 98% of water and by the remaining 2% of proteins and lipids. It is continuously and uniformly distributed on the ocular surface thanks the blinking, an irreplaceable function for our sight.
In fact it is able to improve the optic quality of the image regularizing the corneal surface (it has an index of refraction of 1,33, very close to that of the cornea); it allows an adequate lubrication reducing the friction of the eyelids; it allows transport and diffusion of molecules (oxygen, carbon dioxide, ions, mucins, lipids with a slightly alkaline pH 7,3/7,8), vital elements for the survival of epithelia and cornea; it has strong antibacterial activity thanks to the presence of some enzymes and it guarantees the parts and keeps the ocular surface clean removing impurities from the environment, the waste of metabolism and exfoliated cells.
